Yoshiko Maruiwa’s super simple guide for 6th graders to take better photos of their artwork

Yoshiko Maruiwa is a member of the 6th grade faculty team here at The School at Columbia University. She teaches Art, and it is a pleasure to collaborate with her on a few different projects each year. After a unit, Yoshiko tries to have the kids take photos of their artwork to load onto shared albums on The Gallery (our in-house photo server powered by Drupal). They then “point” to these images when writing posts on their personal digital portfolio of their work.

Recently, 6th graders completed mosaics – which correlated with their study of Islam and Islamic art. Yoshiko created the following simple slide show for students to use as a guide for taking better photographs of their finished tiles.

Meeting with @donbuckley to schedule afterschool professional development workshops at @The_School

Don Buckley (my boss and the Director of Innovation at The School at Columbia University) and I met this morning and created a schedule to formalize our informal in-house professional development sessions. Here’s the note that we composed this morning that Don just sent out to faculty:

Based on the success of the iPad App shares and our Tweetup, we’d like to host more meetups about new media literacies. The following dates and times have been set aside for these conversations. Please feel free to suggest other topics too! All meetups will happen in the Library.

Notes from “Collaborating with New Media” at Teach21

Teach21 is a professional development institute for 21st Century educators organized by faculty and administrators at The School at Columbia University. Every day there is a keynote speaker (Sree Sreenivasan, Howard Gardner, A.J. Jacobs, Karen Cator) and many half-day and full-day concurrent offerings.

Today, I led a half-day (2.5 hours) with attendees showing ways we use a variety of New Media tools here at The School to collaborate and innovate. There is just too much to share, and now I belatedly wish I’d shown less stuff. Better to explain in depth a few key projects to examine their innovation, interest, usefullness, assessment, and/or literacy. Even better to have a conversation with participants. Now I know. It’s less effective to see products without the process, duh. Plus, there was little interaction and I talked to much and jumped around too much between websites to the point that it made sense only to me. The last time I received negative feedback was at ISTE 2010. I need to now get over it, move on, and make my next presentation better.
